Discovering Hope by Chautona HavigTitle: Discovering Hope
Author: Chautona Havig
Major Themes: Christian Life
Synopsis: Jay and Hope have a lot of differences; can they work through them?

I’ve been wanting to read Discovering Hope for a long time. When I finally got my hands on it recently, I enjoyed it thoroughly. I found the juxtaposition of grief and loss, and, on the other hand, budding love, to work together quite well.

Jay was sitting under a tree, minding his own business, when he first became aware of Hope’s existence. He was as intrigued by her and her faith as she was by his Indian heritage. She is even more intrigued when she learns that he has amnesia as a result of an accident and can’t remember living in India as a child!

Hope is struggling with grief over losing her brother recently, and then faces even more loss. Eventually, Jay, though still an unbeliever, helps her to cope. Will he ever be able to truly believe, though? And can they work through the cultural differences even if he becomes a Christian?

There was so much to love in this story. The tidbits of Tamil culture and language, Hope’s consistent Christian life, Jay’s questions and observations as he read the Bible (it was pretty funny when he found Song of Solomon!), and much more. I even really enjoyed the bits about her drama class. The clear presentation of the Gospel and the plan of salvation, woven into the story naturally, was very well done. I did feel like the story dragged after I got about two-thirds of the way through. It seemed like the climax had been reached, but there was about a third of the book left.

WARNING: Gosh and gee are used once in chapter 6.
