Major Themes: Christmas
Synopsis: A miserly innkeeper in the crowded village of Bethlehem receives several heavenly visitations in one night, and his life is changed forever.

A Miser. A Manger. A Miracle is one of those books I found free and downloaded, not sure if I’d ever get around to reading it. Then one day, I found myself stuck in a dentist’s office with one of my sons for a couple of hours, and needed something to read. This book was a perfect choice for that day. It’s short and very interesting; even though I knew soon after I started reading what the plot would be, it held my interest all the way through.

Ebenezer is as happy as a man like him can be. His inn, in the normally sleep little town of Bethlehem, is crowded with people. He has told his assistant, Aaron, to cram them into every corner. Soon the inn is as full as it can be. When a young couple arrive looking for a space, Aaron smuggles them into the stable so they can have some privacy, even though they can’t pay for it.

Ebenezer goes home to get some relief from the stress, and soon falls asleep—but only briefly. Suddenly, an angel appears in his room and takes him on a journey. During the long, troubled night, Ebenezer learns more about himself than he ever knew or wanted to know before—and Aaron and his family have incredible experiences, too.

I loved this take on Dickens’s A Christmas Carol. Marianne Jordan has done a masterful job of telling an old story in a fresh way, and bringing the salvation message out in a clear way. If you need a short, inspiring read, or if you are looking for a different sort of Christmas story, take a look at this one. I also appreciated the way she showed the entire life of Christ on earth in a few chapters.
