Synopsis: Lovely pictures and text tell the story of the building of the Golden Gate Bridge.
We’ve really been enjoying Pop’s Bridge, a picture book about the building of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California. Robert’s father is a skywalker, doing the iron work at the very top of the bridge. Robert and his friend Charlie spend a lot of their time sitting on a nearby hillside overlooking San Francisco Bay, watching the bridge take shape. Charlie’s father is a painter on the bridge, but Robert figures that his own father has the most important job—until a tragedy opens his eyes to the fact that all the workers are equally important.
Beautiful, detailed paintings bring this building project to life, and help tell a lovely story about friendship and the importance of working together. Two pages at the end give more information about the bridge and its history. I have read this book to my little boys many times since it arrived in our house, and I anticipate reading it many more times. It’s one that won’t grow old very fast!
