The Smallest Turtle by Lynley DoddTitle: The Smallest Turtle
Author: Lynley Dodd
Major Themes: Ocean Life, Sea Life, Sea Turtles, Turtles
Synopsis: A baby sea turtle who hatches later than all the others struggles to reach the sea.

Lynley Dodd’s picture books are great fun to read aloud. Most of her books that I have read have been Hairy Maclary books, but a couple of weeks ago I got The Smallest Turtle from the library. It’s a fun one to read, too! How can you resist language like, “So away he went, skitterscatter…down a gravelly hole…through some prickly grass….” The rhyme, rhythm, and repetition in this story make it fun, too.

This little book tells the story of a little sea turtle who has just hatched on a beach. He was late; the other baby turtles all hatched before he did and went to the sea right away. He is left to try to reach the sea under the burning sun, through all sorts of dangers. Will he make it? This is a great way to introduce little people to sea turtles. In fact, it would have gone very well with the lesson we had a few months ago in science about sea turtles. Better late than never! Any little child who likes stories read to him/her, however, will enjoy it.

No warnings!
